The Tale of Brown Betty or The Tale of Two Tea Cosies

Did you know that those lovely old round brown teapots actually have a special name and a long history? Old brown teapots just like this one...this 4 cup pot is over 30 yrs old...

While mine is a cheap Chinese replica the first Brown Betty's originate in England and were made from a special brown clay discovered in 1695 which held the heat better than previous clays used. It was in the Victorian era that their lovely roundness was developed to enable the tea to swished around to make it brew better. They had a special glaze known as Rockingham glaze which is nice as we live near Rockingham in WA.
On Monday I told you that I was again using this teapot as I'd run out of teabags and that I was very pleased with the better, stronger tea I'd made in it. However it has been rather cold this week and it became obvious that dear Betty needed a new coat.

I found some lovely very chunky/12ply wools in my stash and measured my teapot...

Using 5mm needles to make it a tight knit for heat retention

Cast on 25 sts
Knit 5 rows; increase once in the middle of Row 5
Change to stocking stitch and starting with a purl row work another 17 rows or as required to fit your teapot.

Row 23 (K3 K2tog) to the end of the row
Work 5 rows in stocking stitch
Row 29 (K1 K2tog) to the end
Work 7 rows in stocking stitch
Row 37 (K2tog) to the end
Row 38 Purl to end
Cast off

You simply make two of these and stitch them together leaving room for Betty's handle and spout, or what-ever your tea-pot is named :D Each half will look like this...

Doesn't she posh now? I added some short pieces of twisted yarn to the second one but you could really go to town with knitted or crocheted embellishments, fancy buttons or perhaps some embroidery ...

I'll put the kettle on.

Billy Connelly's quote, "Never trust a man who when left alone with a tea cosy does not put it on his head!"

Last September was the very first National Wear A Tea Cosy Day and it raised lots of money for charity.

Twitch was very pleased to see some fresh kale in the shopping bag today, he really loves it. I also filled a bag with cauliflower leaves at the shop and have washed them as I expect they have been sprayed with pesticides etc.

My first pet rabbit, Snowy, enjoyed eating rolled oats with used tea-leaves mixed in as well as fresh vegetables, each to his own I suppose. This was in the early 1960's.

Dear Rose is also thinking and drinking tea this week, have a look at her blog here

Bye bye for now,
Sue

Happy Mother's Day

With best wishes to all the wonderful mums/mummas/mothers for a Happy Mother's Day and I hope you have find comfort in your memories if your mother is no longer with us.

Mum, Elizabeth and I around 25 years ago...

and I found this photo of my children's mum(myself) aged 10yrs, taken not long before we left England for Australia. I'm wearing my beloved kipper-tie dress that Mrs Scargill had made, Gillian also had one in the same material.

I still have the dress and a few others from my pre-teen days, I was a hoarder er collector even back then 45 years ago! Considering I wore it so much it is still in good nick!

So enjoy your day where-ever you are,
Love from
Sue

My Nana's Brasses

I have a few things that belonged to my Nana Gardner and I think that her brass ornaments are my favourites. They sat on the corner of her fireplace and I was always welcomed to get them down and play with them as a child 50yrs ago. Here you can see that they have not lost their charm to young girls...Olivia about 5 yrs ago...

They were looking rather dull yesterday so I checked on-line for a 'natural' or green way to clean them, Brasso is very toxic and I haven't bought any for many years. The easiest way I found was to make a paste of bicarb of soda and fresh lemon juice and it worked very well with an old toothbrush... below are the twin ducklings and you can see the difference the polish makes...

This little bell was bought by Auntie Jessie when she was a girl over 70 yrs ago and given to Nana...

the whole family...

I've tried soaking the 2 swans I bought at a car boot sale in a bicarb and water solution overnight~this is a great way to clean coffee cups etc but it hasn't worked on the brass so I'll have to make some more lemon paste.

Do you have any pieces of brass like these? How do you clean yours?
Bye bye for now,
Sue

My Antique Jelly Molds

These intriguing ceramic jelly moulds came from Auntie Jessie. They were given to her by a family friend, Mrs Labender, who was the cook at Quernmore House near Caton. A Google search reveals that they are Victorian and similar to item W11421 on this page. These two are stackable and the larger one is about 9inches tall.

I've never used them but cherish them because of their provenance.

I think they could be used in one of those guessing games we see on TV. Do you have any jelly moulds? Do you still make jelly for your family?

It's pouring down here so the washing will have to go on the on the verandah on the clothes horse....that's something else that was also around in the 19century!

Enjoy your day, where ever you are,
Love, Sue

Friday On My Mind...

...when we simply post a photo of something special or "on our minds" and visit others who are playing and leave the link back to our own photo.

Here's a beautiful English china Tea Set given to me recently by our friend Barbara. It was a wedding present to her elderly friend, Ray, who passed away 2 years ago. It seems to be about 50 yrs old and sadly unused. There are 6 cups and saucers and cake plates as well as the elegant milk jug and sugar bowl. A very pretty serving plate completes the set.

What's on your mind today? Hope you have a wonderful weekend, love Sue xx
